With Stephanie's career as a research scientist taking off, and their teenage children growing up faster than Jim would care for, the family patriarch seems to be less and less relevant at home. Making matters worse is a violent armed robber at large in the city and Jim's job as a police sketch artist has thus far been unsuccessful in helping to catch the criminal. In a last ditch effort to bring his family together and fill the void in his life, Jim organizes a trip to South America where his wife Stephanie is researching a strange plant she has recently discovered.
